Been forging Damascus here in Memphis since 2009, and one question I get
constantly from first-time buyers is how to tell a forge-welded and folded
pattern apart from a printed or acid-etched one on top of plain steel.
Figured this crowd would have sharper eyes on it than most.
The short technical answer: a forged pattern comes from stacking two or
more steel types, forge-welding them into a billet, then folding and
welding repeatedly — each fold doubles the layer count. The pattern that
shows up after etching is the layers themselves, running all the way
through the steel. A printed pattern sits on the surface, so no matter how
good it looks new, it's not there anymore once you've sharpened past it a
few times.
Curious how you all check this in person — sharpening wear over time,
weight/balance, the way the pattern behaves at the edge bevel versus the
flat? I look at this stuff daily from the maker's side and I'm sure
there's a "tell" collectors rely on that I don't think about the same way.
Also happy to answer anything on the forging/heat-treat side if it's
useful — we run our blades at 58-60 HRC and there's a real trade-off
there (edge retention vs. chip resistance) that doesn't get talked about
enough outside the maker community.

Thank you bringing this up! I guess I never really thought about it before. But then I have seen 'real' damascus many times, and I deal with laser markers at work. If I am able to inspect the blade personally, I believe I can certainly tell the difference. But then again, I know what to look for.
I guess for the uninitiated, if a pattern is printed or chem-etched into a blade there is more of a distinct line where the 'pattern' stops. I have not seen a real sharp line like that on 'real' pattern welded steel. And if you look real careful you can see the pattern even in unetched steel.
What steels do you favor to create your pattern welded steel? I saw one recently, that I was honestly a little surprised they were able to get the pattern to pop the way it did on it, given the two alloys of steel used.

Good eye — that's exactly it. A printed or chem-etched pattern has a crisp,
almost stenciled edge where it stops, because it's sitting on top of the
steel rather than running through it. Real pattern-welded steel doesn't
have that clean a line since the layers are physically forged together,
not applied afterward.
As for the steel combo — we pair a high-carbon steel with a nickel-alloy
steel for the contrast, that's what gives the pattern its pop after
etching. I'd rather give you the exact grades we run instead of a vague
answer, let me confirm those with Mark and follow up here.
