Im new to collecting, and I was wondering what some good ways to clean up and restore older pocket knives without lowering the value. Like what to use, what not to use, tips and tricks things like that.

Only remove surface rust, never use a polish that removes the patina.  Just give a good soaking in food grade mineral oil and clean out the liners and any gunk between tang and liner.  Wash it out after the soak (overnight) with some soap and water, blow dry, then oil the joints.  You might want to use some lemon oil on the scales to brighten them up.  Then enjoy.

Does anyone have a recommendation on removing some staining on a blade? I was thinking a polishing compound might do it? Its my old Ranger, an inexpensive knife that I would like to look just a bit better!

I'm with Steve.  I have some inexpensive knives that I would like to make look better if I could.
