'n @ stephan ... ... ... ... ... that's a novel use for coon p......  , does quite the patina result ???

Is the rem oil remington gun oil? What can a person use if you want it to be non toxic.Grohmann's uses mineral oil.Is it a bad idea to keep it in the sheath for storage?I have a lot of questions .This is my first carbon blade.Paul
AG. Russell sells a product called Rust free that I find very good.

Sorry Paul, yes Remington gun oil.  Stephens correct, about any gun oil you have will work.  I have not tried this  but a friend told me about it...M-Pro 7 Gun Oil LPX (CLP)..REPLACES ALL GUN OILS, CLP''S & DRY LUBE
NON-HAZARDOUS, NON-TOXIC & BIODEGRADABLE. COMBINES HIGH QUALITY SYNTHETIC OILS & LPX ADDITIVES. UNIQUE TECHNOLOGY IS RESISTANT TO EVAPORATION, SEPARATION & GUMMING
ODOR FREE. FORMULATED FROM TECHNOLOGY WITH THE LOWEST KNOWN FRICTION COEFFICIENT
MEETS REQUIREMENTS OF MIL-L-63460 REVISION ''E''

We dont keep them in the sheath when storing, just tends to retain moisture

coon p.....?

and congrats on the first Carbon steel, let us know as time progresses how you like it

Thanks for the advice about keeping my carbon blade in good shape. The Grohmann carbon knives are made of C70 carbon steel . Do any of you with metallurgy knowledge know about this steel? Paul

C70 can be equated to an ANSI 1070.

Here is a useful resource for common cutlery steel specs.

... w/ a 0% chromium (Cr) content .. this schtuff will be prone to oxidation !!!

"n yes .. bad idea to store it in the sheath.

Paul, I grew up with a fixed blade knife that I think was C75 carbon steel and it was a great hunting knife. It took and held a razor edge and I could whip it back into top shape fast on an old oil stone. I don't know about the meatallurgy but I know about the usefullness of this steel and that's very good.
Thanks for the input Robert.I am using gun oil to preserve it and I store it out of the sheath. Paul

Even though I  coated my blades with a wipe of oil, Coon pee or CLP, when sharpening or when I thought about it,  My EDC Case CV knifes would get like red specks started after  couple days of riding motorcycles and staying wet,. I decided  experiment with Gun blue. It seems to have helped . 2 and half years and no specks with only the same level of near neglect.
