I have an old tri hone commercial wet stone. The previous owner bathed the stones in 30 weight motor oil. My question should I try to clean out the heavy oil, with what? and then use what oil next?

I'm no expert but here is what I would do, Clean it with a good liquid dish soap under hot water using a stiff Bristol brush. After a few washes I would use a good honing oil. I clean my stones almost every time I use them.  Honing oil is far better than regular motor oil as it helps float any metal off the stone.

I hope this helps,

Sincerely,

John

Dawn dish soap using Johns method, it that does not cut all the way through a little alcohol should do it.  Honing oil works well

Thank You John and Jan for the advice, I will try out these methods.

I agree with Jan & John.

.

Adding a bit of heat might help "boil the oil out".

I do not mean "boiling" literally ..just.. the addition of some heat will lower the viscosity of the 30W .. aiding in its dissipation.

Alcohol will act as a solvent & dissolve the oil into solution. Analogous to mixing 2-cycle oil & gas.

Don't mix alcohol & heat ..for numerous reasons.. not a good idea.

.

I also use DAWN dish soap .. it really is good schtuff.

A good scrubbing w/ a copper scratchy pad will help too.

.

I actually discarded a stone for this very reason ..and.. I rarely throw anything out.

In my case .. it was one of those inexpensive 2" X 6" black/grey 2 sided carborundum whetstones.

After the addition of the motor oil .. the stone loaded up .. really bad !!

I washed it as described above .. numerous times.

I let it soak overnight in a mix of water & Dawn.

I literally boiled it .. what a mess that was !!!

For < $3.oo .. I replaced it.

.

Might I suggest .. resurfacing as the final step.

Most stones that have seen any use will benefit from a good flattening.

.

Any light machine oil will be better than the 30W.

Honing oil made for whetstones is preferred.

Quality sewing machine oil is pretty much the same thing.

.

G' luck

Thanks Dale , these stones are in great shape other than gooped up with heavy oil.  I will start with the Dawn dish soap and scrubbing and see what happens, then move on to the boiling and alcohol.

I use an ultrasonic cleaner... Mr. Clean-H20 50/50 ....15 minutes.... check and re bathe as necessary.
