Welcome Home...THANK YOU FOR BEING A PART OF OUR COMMUNITY

Being based in Australia, we are fond of the Outdoors.

Like many Outdoor and 4x4 enthusiasts, trips become all the more enjoyable with good Camp meals getting dished up.

1 of the most staple inclusions in Outdoor kits is the old trusty Camp (Dutch) Oven.

Meals prepared are only limited to one's imagination and basically if you can cook it in your oven at home, you can cook it in the Outdoors from Pizzas to Roasts with all the trimmings.

What's your favourite meals and how do you prepare them?

With such a large and varied group gathered here, there will be a myriad of information being shared around.

Thanks, that's a fine recipe. It might work on deer also.

If you have a look at the weblink for the Aussie Camp Oven site, there are tons of recipes in there as well as info on coal / heatbead cooking

Thanks for all of the info, Jason.

Damper / Camp Oven Breads

For those that need quantities:
4 cups of self raising flour
1 small packet of cream
1 can of lemonade
1/2 teaspoon of salt

Method:
Prepare similarly to any other scones, add mixed fruit or whatever you like if you dont want them plain.

You can replace liqiud with beer

You need:
4 cups of self-raising flour
A pinch of salt
50 grams of butter – melted (or slurp of olive oil)
1 stubby of beer
1 bread tin

Sliced olives, diced onion and grated cheese can be added for even more savoury damper.

That's cool Jason. Just last night, I cooked a beer bread, to go with supper. Question: What do you mean by "damper"? That is a phrase or word, not used the same here.

Damper is basically the same as the bushman's loaf, beer bread etc but generally a round loaf, can always raisins and anything else to the mix, it's all trial error :)

Thanks, that's great. Some of us call a bushman's or outdoorsman's bread " Cat Head Bread". I am sure there are a lot of other names for it.

Couldn't agree more Robert. The forum I posted on the first page has some excellent recipes on there including things you probably wouldn't think of cooking in a camp oven.

Hoping to get some bunnies next weekend and will put them in the pot :)

How does everyone care for their camp cooking gear, mainly any cast iron items?

Even though any citrus based cleaners / detergents are ill-advised cleaners, Occassionaly I use them to give the camp oven a decent clean. If needs be with a fine steel wool before re-seasoning it.

Linseed Oil is the preferred oil to season / re-season cast iron items but at times can be hard to find or pricey to use. I have found that using the really fatty, crappy diced bacon helps to remove any bad odours and gives a good seasoning to he oven.

For the outside, you can rub in some of the excess bacon fat and reheat in the oven to turn black and seal but I have been using recently some high heat, flat (matt) black engine enamel. Allowed it to dry in between coats usually 2 is enough and then put in the oven or covered BBQ to help seal it. As a test, I have 1 of my camp ovens under the back patio (lots of salty sea air where I live) and not a speck of rust or deterioration has occurred. This is not something I would recommend as it was done only as a test.

Keen to hear what other's do to seal and treat cast iron implements.

This is Camp Oven Cooker base designed for heat beads in order to utilise your Camp Oven, Dutch Oven, Furphy etc.

Picture is 1000 words as heat beads in the bottom sieve area for air flow, camp oven on the ring above, sit back with a beer and wait for the food to cook.

Found it in 1 of our local camping stores so I bought 2 of them :) not the cheapest at $60AUD each but I didn't have the time to make them myself.

That is a neat little cooker. I have never seen one like that before. I guess it's made for back packing?

not really Robert, it is a bit big for the pack. I have a set of roller drawers in the back of 4wd whcih houses the cooker
