The Mermaid is known as the Mermaid of Warsaw. (as in Warsaw, Poland) Some day I hope to see the real deal.

Below is the art work and more photos:

I purposelessly wanted the artwork to be a simple line drawing done in black on white bone. I felt simplicity would be the best portrayal. I was very pleased with the end results by Mr. OBrien. The hardest part was adjusting the art work so that the brass pins wouldn't interfere with it.

From what I understand, Polish tradition has it that the art work for the Mermaid always has her: nude, facing left, with a sword in her right arm and shield on the left arm. Her fins are always portrayed to the right. She is the defender of the city and as long as there is a Mermaid of Warsaw, their will be a Poland. There must see some truth to the legend because despite numerous occupations and wars, the Polish people always seem to bounce back and regain independence.

This pattern is 4 1/2 inches long and only has a single blade and marlin spike. The design uses the bail to lock the spike in place. The design was a adopted by the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard and first issued in 1942. It remains an issue item in both services. The pattern has changed slightly over time with the most noticeable change being the adoption of two thin back springs in stead of one thick back spring. This allows for enough tension to hold the blade and spike in place without making it a "nail breaker" It also reduces the likelihood of the back spring breaking. The Rough Riders feature this later double back spring. Unlike the military issued compostion/delrin handles, most of the RR feature bone.
