Why I love the Trapper pattern knife.

I love the Trapper pattern knife and I have more of them in my collection than any other pattern. The reason is not the sleek lines or any other visible attribute. It's because I have used it more than any other pattern being a former fur trapper.

I spent 10 years trapping 'coons, fox, 'rats, 'possum, skunk, and anything else of value for its pelt. Many Christmases were merrier becasue of it. I would cut small branches for guide sticks, sharpen points on ground stakes, and cut bait with the clip blade. The spey blade was worth it's weight in gold (even by today's standards) for being able to quickly field skin a catch.

I wore out several of them with the never ending task of keeping them sharp. I never had a knife last more than 2 seasons. And I always carried 2 in my pockets and one in my pack after losing one in the field and suddenly becomeing knifeless several miles from my vehicle. You learn quick in the woods!

If people are interested in this posting, maybe I'll relate some stories. The picture I've posted here is my daughter who wanted to come along one day on a short line. Her facial expression doesn't accurately tell how much fun she had with dad that day.

My newest addition to my Trapper collection. A knife by Jowika (Ireland). This particular Trapper has a bail. I've never seen a bail on one. It also has a longer spey blade than normal. Hybrid? Variation? It's nice looking and the bone is in great shape.

Yes she does, Jan! She says she doesn't know why she made that face other than maybe the 'possum didn't smell very nice. But she always comments about how much she loved those cowgirl boots. Stylish even then!

ROFL, I bet she laughs about the look on her face too

Thanks Ron. Yes I got the inference to hair raising.  LOL Whenever she sees that picture all she can say is "I really loved those boots"!  Even at that age, fashion rules.

The Trapper is one of my favorite patterns, also! But, being a city slicker like I am, I don't have any hair raising (get it? -- hair raising!) stories to go along with my interest. I just like 'em! And, what a brave young daughter you have to hold that possum by the tail like that! She's a cutie, too!

I'll bet that this will become a very interesting thread just as soon as some of our other Trapper lovers awaken and add their stories.

Cheers, my friend!
