Welcome Home...THANK YOU FOR BEING A PART OF OUR COMMUNITY

I was riding my 4 wheeler through the woods the other day and saw this mushroom.  I don't recall ever seeing one like it before.  The pine cone lying beside it is about 3 inches long.  The mushroom was about 7 or 8  inches tall and the head is about 2 1/2 inches wide.  Does anybody know what kind it is?

Looks like an Eringii or a Porcini?

looks alot like this one http://www.first-nature.com/fungi/lycoperdon-excipuliforme.php

Best shroom site I have found is http://www.first-nature.com/fungi/~agaricaceae.php

I am not however a mushroom harvester

I agree w/ Jan . looks like a "puffball" to me.

.

Keep an eye on it .. if it is .. it will grow significantly in size & be spongy later in life .. puffing out its insides (spores) if squeezed to the point of bursting.

But is it safe to eat?
The only mushroom I know how to identify in the wild that is edible (according to the Army Field Manuals) is the Shelf Mushroom.
BTW "Edible" does NOT mean it tastes good.

I agree with you Steve.  I don't eat any mushrooms.  I don't like them.

BTW, I think we need two words instead of just one.  Edible means it won't hurt you to eat it.  Eatable means you would want to eat it.

Agree. But you might need an additional distinction.
Deer, squirrel, Rabbit, Possum, Raccoon, Gar, Bass, Bluegill, etc. would all be under the "eatable" category, while the Armadillo, rats, mice, voles, k9's and felines for example, would be firmly in the "edible" category.
But what about those that blur the line? For example, Carp are "eatable" when smoked, but not so much when fried. Fried carp would definitely fall under "edible". (or possibly even "inedible") Depending on the time of year, Bear can be "eatable" or "edible".
Maybe a "Eatable**" to indicate "When properly prepared, or depending on time of year." Rocky Mountain Oysters would be an "Eatable**" designation. It depends on how they are cooked if they are eatable or edible.

Steve, you mentioned carp. Here is my recipe for carp.

Place the cleaned carp on a cedar board.  Season to your taste.  Bake in a 350 degree oven til done.  Remove from the oven, throw away the carp, and eat the board!

LOL
I used to know a guy that had the same recipy for CATFISH!
(of course, he was at least one or two bricks shy of a full load. He thought Purina dog food was an excellent snack ... and not just when he was drunk. He also seemed to enjoy taking a wizz on an activated electric fence. He must have, since he did that more than once ...)

Steve, I think that guy was several bricks short of a full load!  LOL
