The online community of knife collectors, A Knife Family Forged in Steel
Measures that may be brought in later in the year mean that although we will be able to buy knives online they will need to be collected from the retailer personally?
Now I haven't bought a knife from Greg at TSA for a while mostly because I have been spending my money on straight razors. Also, the £ has dropped 20% since Brexit was announced which makes purchases from the States just too expensive with shipping and taxes.
This proposed legislation, however, means that I would have to travel to Detroit Lakes, so that Greg could check that I am over 18, and pick up my purchases in person. That could make the next GEC rather too much trouble, I guess that is the point!

For the great majority in the UK knives are no longer tools Jan, despite the glaringly obvious fact that kitchen drawers are stuffed with them. Because the TV and press always talk of knives as weapons or "blades" and "knife crime" is the term for the sort of extreme violence that drug dealers get up to. The idea that these people are not going to be obtaining knives if they can't buy knives online is just laughable. Politicians have to be seen doing something and as they have no familiarity with knives you can't expect a lot of sense from them.

And above all...tool vs weapon.
In my opinion that is the key. Educating the public about the value of a knife as a tool. Even as I type that it seems so silly. We were all brought up to respect the tool, somewhere along the line it became a political tool. Apparently the politicians are the only people using this tool these days, for political gain. Not a lick of common sense with any of them, either ours, theirs, Russias...the country matters not. They are all without enough sense to get out of the rain
First and foremost John Bamford I am happy to see you home!!
the owner of the house turned the tables on the thief took the screwdriver and stabbed the villain to death. No knife in sight, the house owner was arrested and charged with the murder of course.
Regrettably now, legitimate gun owners are buying insurance against this same type of action here in the USA. Someone has invaded your home and in defense of it the criminal gets hurt, you get arrested! Seriously? The smart folks have left the buildings, leaving behind those that think we cannot see behind their political masks!
I linked this discussion to another I started today and when I did I took a moment to re read this one.
John,
I know there are collectors in the UK and I think finding a way to bind them together for fighting this would be awesome, but that was not my thought when I read it.
My thought was that it is such a shame that a country that just 2 generations ago rightfully prided themselves in the very long history for fine cutlery has gone so far in the other direction. I think this may be the tragic result of countries not celebrating or teaching history any longer because it does not fit the current political narrative.
Well somehow I think we should have seen this coming. This, in my opinion, is why we need to keep support the people who fight for our rights as knife owners. As they say it can be a slippery slope when you let them get a foot in the door to limit our freedoms...Judge calls for 10in pointed kitchen knives to be ground down to a rounded end after hearing three serious stabbing cases in last three months
You have to read the article to appreciate how silly this is

I have just finished replying to Greg's discussion on this matter Jan, with judiciary such as this then there is little hope for us. What is worse is I think that a lot of my fellow countrymen are simple enough to think this a good idea.
It scares me John that the folks that could fight back on this wont. Do you think it is a case of just too busy to take the time and oh well, what happens happens attitude?
It is a worry Jan, some of us have replied to the governments "consultation" but I fear we may be far too few to affect the outcome.
John if you can get me the link to that maybe we can get enough to be effective!
It appears that this consultation is closed now Jan, I found it through Heinnie Haynes which must be one of the largest knife and outdoor equipment sellers in the UK.

After reading that web site that John posted, three things that they will be doing in the UK stood out to me and waved red flags. They are becoming a police state in the UK! If we don't want the same thing here, we better fight for our rights and fight hard. The three things are:
Targeted stop and searches seems to mean they can just stop someone and search them with no probable cause and no warrant. Do we want that here?!
Targeting habitual knife carriers? First how do they know who are habitual knife carriers? Do they have neighbors or other family members ratting knife carriers out? Sounds like Nazi Germany! How many of us habitually carry one or more knives daily?
Weapons sweeps? Going house to house just looking for whatever you can find? That is definitely Nazi Germany!
There are several things we need to do if we want to keep our guns and our knives. Don't doubt, if they get our guns, they will come after our knives just like in the UK. First join the NRA, Gun Owners of America (GOA), and Knife Rights. If you can't join the NRA and GOA both, at least join GOA. It only costs $20 a year and they do most of the work for you in writing and emailing congress and even the president. All three need many more members and our contributions to fight to keep our rights. The leaders of these organizations wield a lot of influence if they can go to government officials and say, "I have millions of members who will vote for those who stand up for our rights and against those who don't!" The more members they have, the greater their influence.
Another thing we need to be doing is voting Republican. I realize they are far from perfect. To me this is not a political issue, it is a Second Amendment issue. Let's face it, the Democratic party is not the Democratic party any more. The national Democratic party is now the socialist party. And more and more they are making no bones about being socialist. They do want our guns. Socialists cannot abide the people being armed. The Democrats think they can take control of congress in the upcoming elections. If they do, it will give them a golden opportunity to push through a big chunk of their anti gun agenda. They smell blood in the water now. In her campaign Hillary said the Supreme Court got it wrong when they ruled the Second Amendment was an individual right. She vowed that when she was elected, she would fix that. It would have been easy to do. At the time the Court was a 4-4 tie. She would have appointed a rabid socialist like herself to the Court. That would have given the Socialists a 5-4 majority. Then they could run a case to the Court and declare the Second Amendment not an individual right. If the people don't have a right to keep and bear arms who is left but the government. The Second Amendment would still be on the books, but it would be meaningless. That is why in the presidential election I was not voting for Donald Trump. I was voting for a conservative on the Supreme Court.

Just a couple of clarifications to Charles' post above.
Targeted stop and search, whatever that means in practice, was brought in because the police, it was claimed, routinely stopped ethnic minorities for searches. Now they are supposed to have a reason to believe that the person is in possession of something illicit.
Targeting habitual knife carriers means something different over here, at least to the police. Very few people carry knives and the powers that be seem to consider that all knives are by their very nature weapons. It has been the case for as long as I have known illegal to carry a weapon for self-defence, so if the police think that you habitually carry a knife then unless you can prove otherwise you are likely breaking the law. Very few knives are considered legal to carry, basically sub 3 inch slip joints, and even these are illegal if they are to be used as weapons.
I don't believe that weapon sweeps are going to entail random house to house searches unless there is a very good reason for that. It is still legal to own a whole range of knives as well as swords and antique weapons, it is taking them out or using them on someone that is the problem. Despite everything we are still, just about, allowed to defend ourselves and our property provided that you only use the minimum amount of force.
I am not trying to say that Charles overall point is invalid merely trying to clarify things that may be misunderstood from an American viewpoint.
One has to remember that there are differing opinions on this. Not every country in the world thinks they *must* carry a weapon, or even need to carry one. Certainly not having the belief that they have a God given right to. I do NOT want to get too deep into this conversation, as I know the inevitable outcome, but folks have to realise that not every country out there shares the same views on arming everyone and their dogs. Condemning a society for trying to keep their people safe simply because they don't subscribe to your beliefs on weapons...well, I'll just say I disagree, and leave it at that. Everyone has a right to their opinion, but comparing someone to Nazi Germany...especially a country that suffered so much damage and loss to the Nazis...just because they don't have the same views on arming the populace is pretty harsh in my opinion. Live and let live.
