Welcome Home...THANK YOU FOR BEING A PART OF OUR COMMUNITY

I found this growing in my yard yesterday while mowing my grass.  It is about 6 inches tall and the head is about 2 inches wide.  I don't know if this is anything other than a common mushroom, but I don't recall ever seeing one exactly like it before.  My mower threw the bits of grass on it before I saw it.

I was wondering if I should buy a mushroom knife while I am at SMKW next week.  Maybe this one?

Charles, IMO - Yes - buy a new knife just for Mushroom cutting. Any excuse to buy a new knife - I say - go for it.

Looks like a toadstool to me....lol

Charles, you absolutely need one! However I'd suggest a really good book on 'shroom indentification to go with it. Here's mine. Its the Rough Rider you're looking at. Tobias Gibson is the quasi-expert on 'shroom knives having serveral including one he made himself.

Ivars, I thought you were my friend.  How can you say a knife is not needed!?  Need shouldn't have to be a reason to buy a new knife!  Besides what if that is just the forward scout for a full scale invasion.  What if I get up one morning and the whole yard is covered with them and I don't have a mushroom knife?  (Do you think this will work with my wife for an excuse to buy a new knife?)

Good question! :) I have one, but you know last time when I go to the woods for mushrooms I forgot it and I took my old barlow, so its not so looks like its not so very needed to me! :)

Charles, I agree completely! This looks to be an advance scout for a full on invasion, you need a Mushroom knife maybe even one from 2 separate makers, the Rough Rider & Opinels look as if they would do fine.  As you explain it to the wife, tell her it is for the safety of your lawn and to consider these as yard tools.

Charles.  This is a no brainer decision.  Of course you need a mushroom knife.  If you have mushrooms in the yard then a new knife is the only way to go.  The good part is that you are going to SMKW where they have a good selection to choose from.  I know you will find just what you "need".  Josh will help.  Good luck my Friend.

I think you have the right approach Brad.  But I don't know if I can work it for two knives.  She was outside this afternoon as we were watching our little grandson play in his little kiddie pool.  And she saw there was only one of them.

You are right Dave. You have confirmed that I definitely NEED at least one.  Why the very future of my yard may be at stake!  And I am sure Josh will be glad to help me chose the right one.

yo, bubba! we all need a mushroom knife!

the black box in your photo looks like a tombstone, which is what you get if the mushroom is a poisonous variety — at the least, sauté it in a good butter!

Charles, you really should buy two. One for you and one for the Mrs. I agree that this one is most likely an advanced scout. You'll go to sleep one night with a beautiful lawn and the next morning.....INVASION!! Once they get rooted, there's no stopping them. They'll start with your yard and quickly infest your neighbor's yard. Then they cover the whole block and within a few days your entire community has succombed to the invasion. And it doesn't stop there. If you and the Mrs. watch "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" you'll understand why you must be proactive before it's too late. We could all be in mortal danger all because your wife doesn't understand and you're wishy-washy about "do I need to buy a mushroom hunter's knife"! For God's sake man!!! Buy a knife and save the world!!!

Did you say kiddie pool? I will tell you something, drain some of that pool water into the lawn at night and in 2 days you will have more than enough mushrooms to justify buying a knife.

A Mushroom knife, great, I don't have one. I see a big need for one developing. Here in South Louisiana, the only mushrooms that are safe to eat are what we call "Oyster Mushrooms". They grow out of the side of dead trees and are very active after a rain. They look and taste like Oysters, their off white in color. The other day while fishing, I took a break and got out of my boat and went in the woods mushroom hunting. I found a few and while I was at it I took a picture of some, I'll try post that picture and a picture of either a Alligator or Snapping Turtle Egg. I didn't stick around to find out. Mushroom Knife, of course, and a Mushroom knife to cut it up to eat also. So, that should be at least two knives. What do Ya'll, think?
