We are the EveryDay Carriers!

We here at the EDC Club are the side of the knife hobby who are the "Users." We are the EveryDay Carriers. Yes, we probably have one or two stuck back either due to sentimental reasons, or the knife was one of those- "just couldn't say no" when we first saw it and now it is a trophy knife in our possession, BUT, for the most part, we are users.

It's hard for us to imagine spending hundreds, thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars on knives - then stashing them away and not putting them to task, like they were made for. We help knives fulfill their destiny! Yes, they get scratched, tips broken off, and lost, but sitting there collecting dust, all the while its screaming to be carried and used- not our knives.

Granted we may rotate our EDC's in and out based on what we are doing for the day, or our moods, and may even retire one every now and then, but use them we do and are proud of it!

Comment by Mig Santos on January 25, 2011 at 21:53: Patrik, I also wanted the Kukri although the blade angle was too steep for me. But the handle gave a good grip. Like the Millie and ParaM, the Barong locked your grip solidly. I would still go for the Caly 3.5 as my next premium knife. I'm perfectly contented with Spyderco's VG-10.

Chris, if I had found a better price than what was available then, I could have been tempted. But the moment I saw the Barong, it was LAFS! I guess that's "luv at 1st sigh-t".

I guess that's why the Value line has a smoother opening/closing compared to the Byrd line. Could also be the eye-shaped thumbhole that just feels a little weird. But they're cheap, disposable and screwable enough to use on grimy stuff or chemicals.

Chris, I always wished I had the Millie or the Para. What's held me back were the right-side tip-down carry (ambidextrous preference) and the high price (so many others to select from in that price range). Other choices had titanium liners, or Axis-lock or Arc-lock. I ended up with the Spyderco Barong, and that quenched it for me. Yeah, full flat grind is the best. That's the only grind that cut my finger (by a cheap Tenacious)... :)

To address the bird line I'm not impressed wit those knifes I own now for over 4 years the bird cara cara it is a OK knife with a big blade but the opening of the knife just is not what I prefer. The Resilience would be in my opinion since I don't own that knife at the moment much better than the bird cara cara. FFG is a much better blade grind.

Comment by Mig Santos on January 25, 2011 at 4:14: I agree with you, Patrik. The Caly 3 has nice clean lines and curves. Plus the flat-ground leaf blade, my favorite style, and G-10. Although twice the Native's price at ~$133, the Caly 3 is still definitely preferable. Thanks for the reminder!

Like you, I was also thinking of the Resilience. The 4 1/4" 8Cr13MoV Leaf shaped flat ground blade is big. The 5 1/4" G-10 handles have stainless liners, and 4-way carry. It should feel solid in the hand. At $48, it's reasonable. I really enjoy the Tenacious and the Persistence, so the same styled Resilience should be just fine. Spyderco did a good thing with this Value line. At least more people can afford and appreciate them. Plus they're much better than the Byrd line, imho.

I agrre with you. 420 and 440 is a light to sharpen steep type but has the disadvantage that has a low edge holding since i have a loot cheap knifes with this type of steel. Here arrounda loot of people buy knifes mainly for display purpouses so they dond care about the steel type and I agree that for the main EDC knife AUS 8A, VG10 or if you are willing to pay more CPM SP30 or 154cm.
