I can relate with the diabetic problems Arthur.

Bass is a good wood to carve.  Not too hard and nice grain.

Check out the book; Whittling and Woodcarving.  Only book that I've found that includes anything on pits.

ps.  it's a Freightliner...(loaded with beer.)
