The Modern Bait Knife, Continued, A Look at the Buck Clearwater 021 Bait Knife

Most modern bait knives are distributed through Tackle Companies.  While several knife companies make fillet knives, very few knife companies offer a specially made fish-utility or bait knives.  The excuse is there isn't much demand for one or that fisherman haven't quite decided what they want in a bait knife.  One of the exceptions is Buck Knives.  While I'm not the worlds biggest fan of Buck, I give them a big thumbs up when it comes to the USA made Buck Clearwater Bait Knife.  It proved…

For background information on the Modern Bait Knife see my entry at:  http://iknifecollector.com/profiles/blogs/the-modern-bait-knife-by-tobias-gibson

When last I posted I discussed a modern Bait Knife, the Shakespeare Utility Knife.  This entry is going to focus on a much early design first developed in 1951 and pateneted in 1953.  ( I plan on alternating between a modern…

The Modern Bait Knife by Tobias Gibson

Below is an introduction to a series on Bait Knives.  I will return to this blog over time with reviews of the numerous Utility Fishing/Bait knives I own.

The Modern Bait Knife

by: Tobias Gibson

Before World War II most anglers fell into one of two categories -- those who fished for fun and those who fished for necessity.  Those who fished for fun could afford expensive tackle. Those who fished for necessity made their own tackle and used…

Meet the maker - Greg Dash

I was born and raised in Odessa, on Koblevskaya st.

As far as I can remember - I always loved knives.

But if you ask me "Why?" - I would not be able to give you a clear answer. Just like them.

Always wanted to make them. My first knife I made at the age of nine.

I refiled my grandma's favorite nickel silver butter knife.

Obviously, my grandma was not happy.

And at the age of 12 I had a, shall we say, "running with the law" (more on that below).…

TOPS Knives President Mike Fuller

Okay, this is an interesting story.  I don't know what to think of it.  I'm a big fan of TOPS Knives, but this story is too important to not post something about it.

Buck #331 Grand Daddy Barlow

In case you didn't know, SMKW, (Smokey Mountain Knife Works), has an Ebay store. Here's a link: http://stores.ebay.com/MVPs-Knives?_trksid=p2047675.l2563. They call it something else, but if you dig around on the store site you find the SMKW references. They have a quite a number of very nice, very delicious US-made knives for sale, some of them very seldom seen for sale, (like this Buck,…

Are there any other knife throwers here? If so, anyone recognize the logo on the cup? :)

I notice there's not a group for throwers, hm...

Case Caliber vs Gerber LST

I wasn't sure which forum to post this in, so I decided to put it here on my blog page.

I won the Case Carhartt Caliber here on IKC in one of Jan's contests, and have carried it daily since then, so obviously I like the knife a lot. Recently I ran across this Gerber at the local swap meet, (got it for $7.50), which I believe to be an "LST", or a model 400, (nothing other than "Gerber" and "Portland Oregon" are on the blade).. As you can see, they are very similar in size and shape,…

Clean, measured knife-making!

This video from Gough Custom Knives just floored me -- his shop is so clean, & his work so measured...  This was 12 minutes of video worth watching, especially for those of us who have aspirations to make beautiful knives ourselves.

The Second Amendment

  1. The Second Amendment of the United States Constitution reads: "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

What does that mean?  Well let us examine it and see.  It is a fairly simple and short statement.  It has two clauses or sections.  The second states that a particular right of…

Gotta meet this guy!

Hi guys. Here is a local knife artist I discovered today, who happens to be just down the road from me. I was listening to the Dave Congalton radio show today, (same show I was on last week), and Dave had a guy who manages a website featuring local artists where this particular local artist displays his works. Turns out his studio is nearby, and after reading about him I thought I'd share the site with you guys, it has some of his extremely innovative knives displayed. Seems he was raised by…

Hunters Beware!

Thought my blog was the most appropriate place to post this.

First let me say that what happened to Cecil the lion was wrong. Bad hunt, sloppy kill, (took 40 hours), idiotic corrupt guides, pompous dumb ass hunter, etc, etc. However, I don't feel that dweeb dentist represents the average hunter, I think he's a disgrace, and not a responsible sportsman in any sense of the word. A responsible sportsman would never have put themselves in that position in the first place, but…

Microtech ultratech Auto OTF

Lots of ideas and opinions in this arena, the OTF auto knife nich of the market. I really like the ultratech the feel in your hand and pocket, it carries well. The construction is solid, the action is fast and locks up hard. These are hard use knives designed for battle and self defense.

The ultratech is just one model offered by Microtech knives which are made in the USA , they pride theirselves in the use of the best materials possible. Located in Bradford PA. They are building a new… Continue
