Sharpeners, the unsung heroes

We had a discussion earlier about sharpeners and which ones we used most. I would like to address these little (or not so little) tools that seem to fall to the wayside when it comes to knife collecting.

The knife in your sheath or pocket is only as good as the stone you use to sharpen it with. Everybody knows that a dull knife just wont get the job done, so, I want to talk just a little about my stone that i like most.

I was a teenager when my parents bought a house and in the…

POLL?

Statements I have recently heard include

"I dont know why people say the quality is inconsistent, I have never bought a bad one"

"I never should have listened to the bad reviews, I always knew them to be a good company with a good product"

"Everyone said it was close to custom quality"

What I hear when I read comments like that is :

"The internet effects what I purchase and why"

Recently we saw a case where a bad video…

The TWO Schrade-Waldens

Not two knives, but two different manufacturing periods. If you have looked at many Schrade-Waldens you will find that you will come across some that don't look like others, as far as machining, grinding, and handles. Those with celluloid handles and bone look exactly like Schrade Cuts, but are stamped "Schrade-Walden". Exactly. The second Schrade-Walden you'll encounter is made exactly like their later "Schrade" marked knives. Exactly...machining, grinding, everything. And the'll have…

In Memoriam
Vintage Knives

I collect Vintage Knives and I'm sure alot of our members do too. It's fun collecting knives from the yester years. Some we have heard how well they were made and their performance in the feild was hard to beat. The old time construction and the amount of labor put into each one is hard to match in the knife world today. My question for ya'll is "Has anyone bought a vintage knife with a great reputation, to become a user knife". I would like to buy one of the old time knives of our…

Why do you have "That"?

My job is in retail.  I work for a reptile specific pet store.  I carry an Uncle Henry 153 UH by Schrade.  I am often asked by some of the youngsters that see my knife hanging on my belt "Why do you have that?" or "What is that?".  I tell them that it's a knife and I use it for work.  "Just in case an animal attacks you?". No. I don't use it on animals.  I'm an animal lover of all kinds and won't kill anything unless it was a life or death situation.  Even then I'm likely to kill.  (I…

Lone Ranger Knife

I have received my Case Knife club magazine that has the story about the Lone Ranger Kodiak knife that belonged to the Lone Ranger.  I also have a knife, a Case Hammerhead the I purchased from the Lone Ranger estate.

I have not been collection knifes for a very long time but I had a Case Maco and thought maybe I needed a hammerhead to go alone with it.  I was looking around on the internet and found the add for the estate and made a bid.  Next thing I know I have the knife with all…

What have auctions done for our hobby?

When Donnie started collecting you had to go to a knife show or travel to a dealer.  Your local hardware usually only carried a few patterns from one maybe two makers.  Of course as he became an adult, the area around Gatlinburg always had somewhere you could go see numerous brands and being from the South he went there as often as possible.

When I became interested, we had a few dealers that were online.  They would tell you what they had and if you were interested, they would email…

SKS (Stan's Knife Service)

This blog is written to share my experiences regarding the operation of my small knife business.  Some of the experiences are good, some are not good, and some are in the middle somewhere.  I would say my business is not a success yet because my expenses are larger than my income.  However I am not going to quit yet, because I don’t think I have given it enough time.  I am lucky I don’t need to do this for a living.

We have…

A New (Old) NOS Russell Green River Works "Daddy" Barlow

I finally purchased this Russell "Daddy" Barlow.  About 5" long when closed with great saw cut handles, Russell with the arrow thru the "R" is etched on the blade as if it just came from the factory.

The tang has the Russell logo in a diamond shape, and the "R" with the arrow is emblazoned.

What is almost as nice as this 'minty' knife?  It came wrapped in the original waxed-paper covering sitting in the original Russell box that displays the logo for John Russell Green River…
