Knife Collecting... a Great Hobby

From the time I was a young boy I loved looking and watching my dad buying and collecting knives. When he gave me my first knife I was in love . I starting going to places to buy knives. Some days I would go to the hardware store and just gaze thru the glass case thinking of witch one I wanted to get next. Then when I started working I would pull my knife out to cut something and people would ask me were I got that.and I would tell them. It always gave us something to talk about.

Then…

Live & Learn ... Ordering off the Internet

I ordered this little knife Oct. 11th.  It was a pink one I hadn’t seen before … a lady John Deere medium stockman.  It arrived in the mail today.  Pretty green tin,  pretty velvet carrying case … pink jigged bone han … oh wait … is that a crack???   It didn't feel like a crack but it sure looked like a crack.  I made a couple…

Where is the Best Place to get a Knife Deal

So many places to get a deal on a knife. You have the internet so of course you can go to eBay or you can go to your local walmart or hardware dealer. You can even get deals on knives at the flea market. You can even get deals from knife shows on t.v.or even better yet you can get a custom knife made for you the way you want it. Right here on iKC where some of the best knife makers in the world. I like custom knifes and the factory ones. When I buy I like to put in my hand, see what they feel… Continue

Farmington Mo. Gun & Knife Show 2011

Hey everybody Marty here with another gun and knife show .I attended this show earlier today in a town regularly visited by myself. I have to say I was a little disappointed compared to the last show I attended in Cape Girardeau the admission there was $6 and females got in for free. Today's event was $8 and females also had to pay. This event there were maybe 1 or 2 tables of knives and it didn't come close to having 300 tables like…

Where to find knives

I go to garage sales. Not much there.  Antique stores. I find a few but most are real bad condition. Mostly I buy new knives that catch my eye off of the net or gun shows. E-bay scares me because I know there are a lot of people who will rip you off and I'm not good enough to tell the good from the bad. Any ideas are welcome.

Economic Collapse and Value of Collectable Knives

Everyone know that the economy is faltering BIG time. Now with constant headlines showing current unemployment, job losses, mortgage defaults and a government that seems unable or unwilling to commit to a course of action, it is inevitable that the perceived value of material items declines. With that said where do you see the value of collector knives in the future? Will that custom Stryker still be worth what you paid for it? Or how about a Platts Jumbo Toenail? Will collectible knives…

What is the right size knife to take hunting with you

What is the right size knife to take hunting with you? There are many different knive's people take hunting with them.but what size is the right size.from hunting big game to hunting small game. There are many knife's to choose from. Say for instance you go deer hunting and your gun jam's and you run into a bear that does not want you around I'm sure you would not want to pull out a skin'in knife.or if you got lost and had to cut wood to survive I don't think a 4 inch knife will work. So what… Continue

Unconventional Combat Knife.

I am researching my next knife article.  The article will be about unconventional combat knives.  I just finished and shipped out an article about Spyderco's Warrior which was designed by Guy Rafaeli who is an expert martial artist who lives in Israel.  Rafaeli teaches knife fighting to the SF of the Israel Defense Forces.  His rendition of the Warrior is made for only one thing….taking out bad guys nose to nose and toes to toes.  Check out the Warrior on Spyderco’s web site. …

When is a Chinese made knife NOT ok?

On the heels of AG Russell's statement...and my own blog on "Where does that knife come from?", this blog posting attempts to tackle another controversial issue; Chinese-made knives. Before I really get into answering the title's question of "When is a Chinese-made knife NOT ok?", I should probably lay a little groundwork:

* I have Chinese-made knives in my collection. I do. They are from a variety of manufacturer's brands. Some are liner locks. Some are slip joints. Some are…

In Memoriam
The Knife Hobby

No other hobby transcends so many other hobbies, sports, and occupations like the knife hobby does. It also transcends trades, careers, finances, politics, etc. For example, there might be a banker talking to a ditch digger about knives and enjoying the conversation, where usually they would have nothing in common.

I have multiple hobbies, like many people - Some…

New Wounded Warrior Knife Auction Starts Today!!!

The history of this particular knife deserves some explanation.

This spring, Luca, who is an active member of the IKC board, put the time and effort into putting together the orders necessary for a special run of #362211STL Sunfish finished with Black Buffalo Horn.  It turned out to be an outstanding looking Sunfish.  As this was 'his project' I asked him and got the okay for a Prototype knife of the series which would be auctioned for the Wounded Warrior Project.

My intent… Continue

What country does that knife come from?

Recently, I read multiple postings on the AG Russell forum. People were discussing the pros and cons of where knives are made. Predominantly, the discussion seemed to revolve around the somewhat controversial topic of whether or not people should buy knives that aren't made in the USA. Reviewing those postings got my mind to thinking...so I've decided to share some of those thoughts here.

First, I think that it's important that we be able to voice our opinions without people…

Tom Ray Toe Nail

This is the Tom Ray knife that I have been trying to send.

The knife belonged to a friends grand dad.  The back spring was broken.  I found a junk knife on e bayand had the knife rebuild.  All The parts with the exception of the back spring are orginal.  I would like for somebody to give me a idea what the knife is worth.  I will more than likely sell the knife as it is the only toe nail I have and most of my collection is case pocket knives and these things sell to high for me to…

Were tactical tomahawks ever issued to the military as a weapon?

I just received my copy of the Nov. issue of Knives Illustrated which will be on the newstands the first of October. Check it out.

My article is "Tomahawks as Tactical Weapons".  I explored the Vietnam Tomahawk issue with a former LRRP Ranger who was there from 1968 to 1969.  I would like some feedback from this group about the subject of are tomahawks

For instance, I have a Navy Seal friend of 18 years service as a Seal and retired from the Navy with over 20 years…
