The Tale of My Antique Letter Opener & Airport Security

I do a bit of traveling on commercial airlines and one day knew I'd forget to take one of my blades out from my briefcase. It was inevitable. While I do have two briefcases- one for work and one for knife shows- it was having knives in my work one that I worried about.

Yes, I tend to use my briefcase to carry knives in- typically though I use it for hauling the ones sent to my office for me to take home (eBay purchases). But I've always worried one day I'd have a…

Another question about curating knife collections:

Any of you use desiccants to protect your collections? If so, where do you live, (how humid?) and in what what do you keep your knives? (I make drawer cases for all manner of collectors -and lots of knife collectors- and wonder if I ought to help them worry about corrosion.)

A Question about sharpening

What a nice bunch of GOB's you'll are! Many Welcomes! Feel right to home.

So much so, that I have to ask a question. Years ago someone told me that

when you sharpen a good knife, you are not only grinding away the bits

you don't want, but you are also 'smearing' just a few molecules up to

the very edge where they kind'a re-attach and make for extra sharp edge.

He (and while I ain't sure who it was -it sure sounds like a GOB story)

also said stainless steel… Continue

Just got a new folder for tactical use

I am sure most knife enthusiast have particular things which immediately make them salivate while other knifes get added to a collection but not fondled and/or used with affection as those which have specific attributes which make them drool. For me several things in tangent attract me, which can best be seen in several folders, Emerson Commander, Bram Frank’s LLC, and Benchmade AFCK. There are many…

Case Collectors Reunion & Grand Collectors Auction was a blast!

iKC is home of a very diverse group of knife enthusiasts. All you have to do is set the photos to slide show and you will see. Because of our wide range of knife likes, not everyone here is a traditional pocketknife collector, per se, and yet, Case is one of the most popular knife companies in the world, so I thought I'd share a couple of things about my trip.

Yesterday I returned from my trip to Bradford, Pa. where I attended the W R Case Collector Reunion. It is…

Our friend Brian Davis of Mullin, TX

We all miss Brian, and several have asked after him. He hasn't been online since March. I decided to look up his phone number and call him. Just finished a pleasant conversation. He sounds good, and reports that he's not making knives at the moment. I told him he has a lot of friends here who miss him, and encouraged him to logon some day soon and say hello. The latest email address I have is bdavisknives@centex.net

The National Knife Collectors Association needs our support

When I first started collecting knives one of the first things I did was to join the National Knife Collectors Association (NKCA). While I've yet to purchase an annual club knife, I have attended various NKCA sponsored shows and meetings, including board meetings, out of support for this organization.

The NKCA is a good thing. It is headed up by folks who have a genuine interest in promoting our hobby of knife collecting.

I understand…

A couple people asked about this subject, so I put some thoughts together. this installment deals with the tang. Next installment covers the handle material itself. I hope you find it worth a read.

Life, Knives and Fellow Collectors

As I turned another year younger earlier this month I have reflected on my travels through life's passages and I've found the flame for enjoying our hobby is always burning. Yeah, there are times it burns brighter than others, but it's always there.

This year has been crazy busy with life- son graduating from high school, enrolling him in college, adjusting to changes in the home life due to my wife getting a job for the first time in our 25 year marriage (she…

One Exception to my Observation has been noted in 10.5 years

You are a life-form consisted in large mass by your genetic material, a small squishy electrical brain and attached wiring, and maybe a few finer things. In your children do your fathers retrieve for history that which will surely be lost to it — yourselves. The exception to my observation:

"Everything lost can be retrieved except lost time."

I got to scrim all the knives and made a custom cigar cutter for Stallone shaped like a skull with full scrim. BUY/INVEST IN SILVER INSTEAD OF BUYING THAT NEXT KNIFE...

What buy Silver instead of a knife? What are you talking about JT? I'll tell you...Silver is attainable for the average Joe at $18.35 an ounce. I'm no expert this is just a layman's forray into investing/collecting precious metals. Gold is over $1200.00 an oz., Platinum is over $1500.00 an oz., and Paladium is over $500.00 an oz.

So Silver at $18.35 is very lucrative and supposedly will double in the next year. In 1900 there was 12 billion oz. above ground. Today there's less…

Smithing demo.

I did a bladesmithing demo for a highschool class yesterday. I had the boys try and bend a piece of anealed 1/4 steel then heated the same steel and quenched it in water and asked the girls to bend it. You should have seen the look on thier faces when it broke in 1/2.

A G Russell called and our 2010 Sunfish Club Knife is in!!

I'm excited to report our first-ever iKC club knife is in. A. G. called me today as they finished their inspection of each knife in our order.

I'll be emailing all you members who have reserved one so far. I want to get them in and double check the shipping amount and then will let you know.

A. G. said the exotic Monkey Thorn scales (handles) look fabulous. I asked him to snap me a pic so I could show you the actual knife and black belt holster…
