Medicine Blades

I suffer from a sickness called knife collecting. I don't think there's a cure thank goodness, but the same sickness has helped me in stressful times.

A knife and a honing stone works great on stress, better than any pill.

Knife Rescue 101.

Bought a beautiful red stag sharks tooth at a flea market, who ever owned it tried to sandpaper etching off the blade. Shame since this knife was never sharpened, but a great rescue none the less.

Spotting Fake Or Altered Knives

Do any of you folks run into fake knives or altered knives when you are out uying.  Or knives that you just have suspicions about??

Maybe it's just me because I collect mostly antique blades.

But I see that a lot of the new knives many of ou collect are just as expensive as the 100 year old knives that I buy, and I wonder...

Anyway, I ran into this eBay buying guide that applies to knives that are for sale anywhere.

You can check it out at…

Yard Sales

Ya'll should come to California April 15th for a yard sale with junk, collectables and some knives!  Well, mostly just for the sunshine!!

I enjoy going to some yard sales but I have never been thrilled about holding them.  But I have committed myself with fliers and all so I guess I am officially having a Yard Sale.

Hopefully I can sell some to buy some and then put up new pics of my new knives!  That's the plan...

Greater Cincinnati NKCA Show Cancelled

Message from Bruce and Debbie Voyles-

Dear Friends;

With much reluctance we must announce the cancellation of the Greater Cincinnati Knife Show announced for April 20, 21, 22, 2012. We are looking at dates to reschedule in 2013.

There are several reasons we have been forced to make this decision, among them a snafu within the hotel reservation system. In 2009 the NKCA held a show at the Drawbridge, and had future dates reserved several years out, as is standard… Continue

Civil War Era Russell Stag---Can Anyone Help??

I bought this blade as a Civil War era Russell Stag.  It certainly looks like it fits the era and certainly is an old knife.

The primary tang is marked

<>R<>

J RUSSELL & CO.

  GREEN RIVER

       WORKS

The reverse of the tang is blank.

The blade has been worked....a lot.  Sharpened and shaped.  It may be the sharpest knife that I own.  A big, fat, heavy, beefy blade.

This thing is like 4 5/8ths inches closed, 7 3/8ths…

Coca Cola Advertisement Pocketknives

I'm not quite sure how but somewhere along the line I have attracted five (5) pocketknives advertising Coca-Cola.

These are not new knives.  Coke cost 5 cents!  So, it has been awhile.

Three are plastic, two of those are red and one is white.

The other two are silver.

These knives are probably all from the 40s by using other Coke items with the 5 cent identifier.…

1940's La Vespa pics and 1946 Vespa pic

Here is the 1946 Vespa....blue not white.

And the 1940's Vespa pocket-knife (I think you need a nice switchblade to go with that Italian street machine!)…

A La Vespa pocket knife

If anyone here rides or owns a Vespa, especially a vintage or antique Vespa---I own an antique La Vespa knife from the 1940s.  It was one of those Not On Shelf knives.

It is a 2 blade Mother of Pearl (looks to be imitation even though it's nearly 75 years old.  It's 3.75" closed with no bolsters, but a brass bail at the end where the short lade pivots.

The blades are a bit tight, because it has been sitting in a drawer in a store somewhere for those 70+ years.  I've been…

Native American Hand-Napped Knife With Sheath

This sweet hand-napped knife is made of Emerald Green Carrara stone.  Our ancestors built their weapons by hand-napping blades, chipping pieces off stones as they made arrowheads or spearheads or whatever depending on where your folks are from.

This beautiful green Carrara is hard enough to use for cutting or stabbbing.  Doesn't look like it but that blade is strong.  .

I don't buy too many new knives.  My collection is mostly vintage & antique, but I have been wanting an…

Russell Barlows

I got a Russell & Co.--Green River Works Barlow today.  Maybe I will post a pic later, I still have to do the little Coca Cola knives and there are six (6) of them!

But when I put together the post about the Barlows I almost made the mistake of writing a post about Russell Barlows and posting it in the A.G. Russell spot.

I know the difference (I think) but I am not an expert with all of the history an court cases.  But I know my Barlows with the…

iKC, a unique community

A few months ago, a friend did a blog post about our community. I actually have it saved and revisit it often.

Recently, I asked another friend if her son could join us on here. He is mid teens, a knife enthusiast and just an all around young gentleman.

Our community is informative, friendly and respectful. Telling Mom about this reminded of the saved post. I do not think I say Thank you to each and everyone of you near enough for creating and sustaining such a wonderful…

My Barlows

Ya'll know that I am wanting to focus my knife collection.  The switchblades I am not so worried about...yet.  They are tough to find and there aren't any cheap ones out there unless you get lucky.

Pocket knives I have been using the shotgun approach and I need to change that.

So I have mostly been focusing on styles.  And Barlow is my favorite.  Not sure why.

Like Tom Sawyer & Huck Finn, the Barlow was my first knife and I loved it.

As an adult I find they…

Jay's Knives

Hi guys

Searhing around the internet one of the places I keep bumping into is Jay's Knives.  Looks like they have some real nice items.  I haven't made a purchase from them yet.  I have looked at and even written down the name/number/description of a few but haven't actually bought anything.

Probably because you can only buy on the phone and it seem so strange to me in 2012 to have a web based company (or at least partly we based) but you are unable to actually buy anything…

WRCA March Knife Madness

I attended the March meeting of the WRCA in Dover Oh, yesterday.

They are a nice group, even if they are interested in older production knives.  Me?  I’m sort of a tactical folding tool kind of guy.

Mickey Yurco, with his 33 years of police experience, talked to us about knife laws in Ohio, specifically the Northeast Ohio area. …

A New Knife Book

I got a new knife book today.  It's a title most of you probably already have but I am enjoying it and finding useful information in the Big Book Of Pocket Knives, Identification and Values by Ron Stuart.

You already know I collect switchblades.  But recentl also started picking up some folders, which is how I wound up here...and I am so very glad that I did!!

But I wish I had this book long ago.  This is the 4th Edition o it has been helping folks for a long…
